When local police, investigating a mysterious death in the Ukraine, call in two members of the KGB's Special Investigation Unit it is assumed to be because of one of two reasons. Either the crime is political, or the case has such unpleasant overtones and the local law enforcement officials don't want to get caught in any subsequent fallout.

What the KGB men discover is there have been two deaths inside a faulty lift of a block of flats. In each case the victims died from a combination of loss of blood and shock. In each there were a pair of yellow blue bruised puncture wounds on the body. No blood was evident inside the lift.

Battling against a growing hysteria that a vampire is prowling the building, the KGB men try to come up with rational explanations for events. But what they finally discover is even more bizarre and frightening than any story about vampires...
